This small sushi spot, just off of Washington Square Park, is primarily a takeout enterprise. However, since I live nowhere near the delivery radius, I take advantage of the six seats at Sushi 295 Mercer‘s counter. I’m pretty sure there’s not even a bathroom and the menu is small so it’s more of an in-and-out type of thing. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need: really good sushi with no fuss and no price gauging.

The first time I went, I ordered the sushi lunch along with a spicy scallop roll. The next time I went, I got 3 rolls, one being that spicy scallop because it may just be the best spicy scallop roll I’ve ever had?! There are some lovely apps and a few standalone entrees, but the specials are where it’s at. And that spicy scallop, dang.

When it comes to sushi I’m at the stage in life where I’d rather get it less frequently so I can spend a bit more and enjoy superior quality. Finding a casual spot that won’t break the bank but also offers fresh, high quality fish often seems like an impossible task, but Sushi 295 Mercer nails it. It’s the quintessential neighborhood sushi spot…even if it isn’t in my neighborhood. (Oh how I wish it were.)
